Fasting

Lent2017 Matthew Scripture

Fasting

Friday after Ash Wednesday In a letter to his brothers in the Society of the Servants of the Poor Saint Jerome writes the following: "In his kindness, our Lord wished to strengthen your faith, for without it, as the evangelist points out, Christ could not have performed many of his miracles. He also wished to listen to your prayer, and so he ordained that you experience poverty, distress, abandonment, weariness and universal scorn....he desires to include you among his beloved sons...for this is the way he treats his friends and makes them holy. ...he is asking you to grow continually...

Take Up Your Cross

Take Up Your Cross

Thursday after Ash Wednesday In the First Reading, Moses challenges the people, and us, to "choose life". He says, "choose life, that you and your descendants may live." This seems pretty practical. If we choose life, we and our descendants will go on. If not, well... However, I think we need to look deeper. Lenten Reading Suggestions for 2017

Every Lent I like to find a spiritually challenging or enlightening book to read and meditate upon. Seeing the Lent begins March 1st I thought I would share with you some of my favorite titles for Lent.  Feel free to share yours as well. The Spear: A Novel of the Crucifixion Louis de Wohl is by far my favorite Catholic author. The Spear takes the reader through the events surrounding the Crucifixion of Our Lord from the perspective of Cassius Longinus, the man who thrust the spear into the side of Christ.  We've read this story aloud during Lent to...
