Fasting

In a letter to his brothers in the Society of the Servants of the Poor Saint Jerome writes the following: "In his kindness, our Lord wished to strengthen your faith, for without it, as the evangelist points out, Christ could not have performed many of his miracles. He also wished to listen to your prayer, and so he ordained that you experience poverty, distress, abandonment, weariness and universal scorn....he desires to include you among his beloved sons...for this is the way he treats his friends and makes them holy. ...he is asking you to grow continually in your confidence in...

Casting Out Into the Deep

Casting Out Into the Deep

Luke 5:1-11 I believe there's more to this story than what is being reported.  Something doesn't add up.  Jesus uses Peter's boat to preach from, He tells Peter to cast out his nets into the deep.  Peter hesitates but then does so at Jesus' commanded.  Peter then catches a boat load of fish.  Peter's reaction? - "Depart from me Lord, for I am a sinful man."  No "thank you!", "wow", or "how in the world."  Something doesn't seem right. Jesus heals a fever??

Wednesday September 5th Luke 4:38-44 Every parent knows the fear that is associated with the word "fever." Only when one of us falls into ill health do I remember how valuable health is. I often think of Jesus giving sight to the blind, making the...

The Amazing & Astonishing Jesus of Nazareth!

"Be quiet! Come out of him." When was the last time you were truly amazed and astonished?  Were you at a magic show?  Were you watching some great feat of athletic skill?  Were you reading a good book that touched something deep inside you?  Did you witness a real miracle? We are all amazed and astonished at different times in our lives and for different reasons.  Just last night my youngest son was amazed and astonished to see this strange creature we call a Praying Mantis crawling over the playground equipment. In today's Gospel the hearers of Jesus are amazed...

Hometown Boy Returns

Hometown Boy Returns

Monday September 3rd - Labor Day (USA) Above the door of the synagogue there should have been a sign that read "Hometown Boy Returns: Show at Noon." Jesus had been working miracles and word had gotten back to his hometown. The people in the synagogue must have been excited and full of anticipation. That is probably why Jesus was asked to read from the scroll even though He is "the son of Joseph", the carpenter. Jesus read the scripture and told the crowd that "today, this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." There must have been quite a murmur...
